Additional Requirements for Expandables

Expansion can be either on_click or on_mouseover, except on the home page, where expansion can be on_click only.
If expansion is on_mouseover, creative must collapse on_mouseout.
Expansion must not obsure page masthead, top navigation bar or any other advertising positions.
Visible close button required. (Bottom right for vertical expansion, Bottom left for horizontal expansion).

Additional Notes on Overlays

Overlays which resolve into an In-Page ad must follow dimensions of the relevant In-page ad above (eg, Leaderboard, Skyscraper etc).
Overlays which do not resolve into an In-Page ad must disappear completely after display.
Maximum display duration is 10 seconds.
Visible close button required.
Maximum frequency, one per user per day. Ad may not re-run after any period of inactivity — no 'reminder'.

Sound / Audio

All audio lasting one second or more in duration must be user initiated — on_mouseover or on_click.
A clear on/off or Mute button must be present.
Sounds under one second accepted at The Register's discretion.
Maximum audio duration 30 seconds for on_mouseover; 1 minute for on_click

Video

Must include Play/Stop button (Stop button may serve dual purpose of Muting audio above).
Maximum video duration 30 seconds for on_mouseover; 1 minute for on_click

General Notes

Flash — Creative must fuction uniformly in versions 7,8&9.
Flash — Creative should attempt to consume no more than 20% of a readers CPU resource on an average system.
Flash Tracking — Creative must support the 'clickTag' method of click counting [What's this?]
Flash Looping Restrictions — Creative should loop no more than three times.
Backup GIF — Required for all HTML and Flash Submissions.
Alt Text — Optional. Max 50 characters.
Borders — Creatives with a predominantly white or close to white background must have a 1-point black border on all sides, to delineate them from the main page background.
Image Maps — Client-side only.
Testing — Creative must function in a uniform manner in Internet Explorer, Firefox and Opera, unless otherwise agreed.
Lead Times — Please allow two business days for standard creative, three business days for rich media (although we will endeavour to traffic your campaign faster that this if requested, we cannot guarantee to do so). Submission by email only to ads@theregister.com

[2] Outlook 2007 will only display the first frame of an animated gif. We therefore advise clients to either use only a static gif; or continue to use an animated gif, where the advertising message is fully conveyed within the first frame.
